Manufacturers of materials used in car-part assemblies need to understand the emission profiles of their materials for compliance and for researching new formulations. This demands rapid, reproducible sampling and analysis, as well as reliable comparison against control samples. Such quick turn-around is difficult or impossible using the small-chamber techniques required for long-term reference tests.
Increased regulation of emissions in motor vehicle passenger cabins has led to emission standards on raw material and component suppliers. The ultimate goal is to prevent sub-standard products in finished vehicles. Emissions from vehicle trim components (PVC, polyurethane, foam, carpets, adhesives etc.) can adversely affect vehicle interior air quality (VIAQ), and subsequently the comfort and health of drivers and passengers. For example, wood veneer manufacturers frequently use formaldehyde-based adhesives in the production process. However, the carcinogenicity of formaldehyde has made emission levels from wood veneers a concern.
Emissions testing and analysis is also critical at the tailpipe. Despite improvements in fuel quality (including changes to additives), internal combustion engines, and catalytic converters, emissions of VOCs and inorganic gases from motor vehicles remain a significant source of pollution in urban areas due to their numbers.
